I am an Associate Professor in journalism, Director of Undergraduate Studies for The Media School, and Director of the Ernie Pyle Scholars Honors Program at Indiana University Bloomington. I joined the IU faculty in 2007. For 17 years prior to that I taught at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
I teach photojournalism, publication design, and healthcare reporting. My research has lately focused on photojournalism ethics and how situational characteristics influence audience perceptions of photographers' actions confronting dilemma.
Last summer I was in London with 20 students who interned with British media organizations and studied international journalism. This summer I will take a dozen students to Eldoret, Kenya where they will report on the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the work of IU Medical School to end it. Since 1990 I have headed or participated in a series of seven projects aimed at strengthening journalism and journalism education in South Asia and East Africa. I hope you can visit our beautiful campus someday soon.
