The two began idea-sharing due to their mutual interest in and affinity for Africa. A few months ago, Reafsnyder sent Kelly a Christian Science Monitor article about Garway’s work.
Reafsnyder eventually met with her in Monrovia and learned she was coming to the United States on a project with the Population Reference Bureau. Kelly says they began working on a way to get her to Indiana University, an effort eventually supported by the School of Journalism, the African Studies Program, the Office of Women’s Affairs and other campus affiliates.
“I am fascinated by the role woman played in ending the war in Liberia and about how they are leading their country out of a devastatingly difficult decade of war,” said Kelly in an e-mail. “I think Liberian women are some of the bravest people in the world. I'm really pleased that I've been able to introduce her to so many people here who are focused on Africa and the role of women in the 21st Century.”
