Officers

President: Mary Kenney 

Mary is a junior majoring in journalism concentrating in public affairs and a minor in psychology. Last summer she interned as a business and science reporter for the San Diego Union-Tribune in southern California. She has held multiple positions at the Indiana Daily Student and is currently a managing editor. In August 2011 she interned for Intensive Freshman Seminars at IU and helped teach a class about First Amendment case law. As president she hopes to increase chapter visibility on campus and in the community. She also wants the chapter to become more active in the national society’s work advocating the rights of journalists and the public’s right to free speech. E-mail: mskenney@indiana.edu
Vice President: Michael Auslen 

Michael is a sophomore from Arvada, Colo. He has been involved at the Indiana Daily Student since the start of his freshman year and will be a campus editor this fall. At the IDS Michael has covered the midterm election and city government beats and designed pages. During the summer he interned at the Loveland Reporter-Herald in Colorado and had his work published in newspapers throughout his home state. He’s majoring in journalism and political science with a certificate in informatics and minors in Spanish, history and West European studies. Secretary: Stephanie Doctrow 

Stephanie is a senior majoring in journalism and political science. She is the current editor-in-chief of Inside magazine, and has interned at Louisville Magazine in Louisville, Ky. and Money Marketing magazine in London. Stephanie spent last spring break hiking the Outback and studying Aboriginal media and culture with the School of Journalism, and she has also traveled to England, Italy and France during her time at IU. As secretary of SPJStephanie hopes to encourage fellow journalism students to take advantage of the educational, social and networking opportunities the organization offers. Treasurer: Chrissy Ashack 

Chrissy is a senior at Indiana University studying journalism and political science. She has been working for the Arbutus Yearbook since her freshman year and was the Editor-in-Chief last year. Social Events Chair: Claire Aronson 

Claire is a sophomore majoring in journalism and sociology. She has worked at the Indiana Daily Student since last fall and is currently campus editor. She is also a member of the Society of News Design.  She traveled to Hawaii with her journalism class in May to report on Japanese American veterans in World War II.  She is the social events chair of the IU SPJ chapter and hopes to spread SPJ’sprinciples throughout the J-school and campus. Web/Social Media Chair: Meg Ely 

Meg is a senior majoring in journalism with a concentration in international studies. She recently completed a semester abroad at the University of Cape Town. She has had numerous positions at the Indiana Daily Student including campus editor, reporter and layout designer. Meg spent the summer of 2011 in Washington, D.C. interning for Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) with a focus on web publishing and new media. E-mail: mcely@indiana.edu
Web/Social Media Chair: Amelia Chong 

Amelia studies journalism, sociology and creative writing. She currently works as a reporter and photojournalist at the Indiana Daily Student. Apart from the paper, her involvement with the Media Living Learning Center and The Reader, Read’s newsletter, has ignited a love for sharing her interest in the media with others. An international student from Singapore, Amelia has interned at two of the biggest names in Southeast Asia’s media industry, including the country’s largest news provider. She looks forward to creating a greater web presence for the IU chapter and, in doing so, promoting journalism that is both powerful and ethical.
