To his readers, Ernie Pyle was a master of telling the story of the little guy, of describing the fears and daily strife of soldiers fighting in World War II.

Before I went to Germany with the 3d Infantry Division in 1957 I was in 3d Infantry Division Trains..it was commanded by Col. C.C. Holcomb..the same cigar smoking commander in the article. He did not go with us but was our commander in Ft. Benning Georgia. He was a great guy...great soldier, leader and to the extent allowed of a superior officer, a friend. zubeey

I am interested in black soldiers from Indiana who served in North Africa at the same time Ernie Pyle was there. Altho the intro to this installment above states Pyle "seldom" referred to black troops, any information at all would be helpful. How many of Pyle's columns made reference to black soldiers, especially those from Indiana, & how might one identify these columns? Thanks for this opportunity to ask a long-held question.

I am trying to find information about my father's ship which was in the South pacific some time around March or April of 1945. The only information that I have to go on is that he was on the USS Eldorado in that year and that Ernie Pyle was on his ship and it was not too long before Mr. Ernie perished in the war on April 18, 1945. If anyone has any information about this ship, or when Mr. Pyle was on the USS Eldorado I would sincerely appreciate that information. Thank you very much!

Sincerely,
