To his readers, Ernie Pyle was a master of telling the story of the little guy, of describing the fears and daily strife of soldiers fighting in World War II.

It's just too bad that we have no Ernie Pyles telling us the real story in Iraq.

We have, instead, Hannity and O'Reilly, Limbaugh and other neocon newscutters making comfortable livings spreading Administration propaganda at will.

Where is Ernie now, when you really need him?

When I was stationed at Kirtland Field at Albuquerque in fall 1944, I spent quite a bit of liesure time at the USO downtown. One Sat nite after a dance I wlaked a cadet nurs back to quarters at the nearby Catholic hospital. As we neared she pointed out a smaoll house on the campus and said "that is where Mrs Ernie Pyle lives while he is away".
