To his readers, Ernie Pyle was a master of telling the story of the little guy, of describing the fears and daily strife of soldiers fighting in World War II.

Just want to say THANK YOU for this site. I found the address in a book I read recently: "War Is" edited by Marc Aronson & Patty Campbell. We need to keep history alive or we'll be doomed to keep repeating it. Once again, Thank You for this site.

My father served in Northern Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was shot twice on Anzio beach. He never spoke to "us girls" about it unless we asked, but I was always proud of him anyway! Thanks for letting us all read the stories we never got from our dads on how it really was out there.

Every April in Okinawa, on the Sunday nearest April 18th, the American Legion and the tiny USMC detachment on Ie Shima gather at the site where Ernie died to play taps, lay a wreath and remember the Soldiers' friend who spent his last night with the troops there. A photo of the monument taken in 2007 is at the web site above.

When you are in the thick of things and you get to witness what is behind that paper news report, being calm and warm-blooded, compassionate with humor is such a wonderful gift. Herein you can relay the real story and that is what Ernie Pyle's writing is about.

I think that Mr. Pyle's writings show the feelings of all men that have seen war and faced death. I just wish that more young people were taught about the real heroes of our country. I came home; but, sometimes I wish that I had not, because I never really came all the way. The real me died in the rice paddies of Vietnam. My goal is to read Mr. Pyle's writings so that I know I am not alone.

My father, Major Mishkin, served on the hospital ship SS Ernest Hines during WWll.

My father, Major Mishkin, served as a doctor on the hospital ship SS Ernest Hines, treating wounded American and German soldiers. When he would tell the Germans "Hitler is kaput", they would quickly reply "Nein, nein! Then he would play for them the news from the BBC radio and then they would fall silent. I think Saddam's men were brainwashed just as were Hitler's. The written and broadcast word are just as important now as they were on the Mediterranean in WWll.
