To his readers, Ernie Pyle was a master of telling the story of the little guy, of describing the fears and daily strife of soldiers fighting in World War II.

My grandfather was also part of the original crew, Ship's Cook for crew mess. He thought Ernie Pyle was the best thing since canned soup and talked about him to my father. (I would love to know if anyone remembers Boone.) Are there any photographs of Pyle with the crew?

My father was part of the original crew of the Cabot and was serving on board when Pyle was there. I believe Pyle wrote more than one column about the "Iron Woman." My grandmother clipped and saved at least three thinking they might be referring to her son's ship, a speculation he later confirmed. I read those columns several years ago, but don't have them in my possession now as my father donated them to the Cabot Association two or three years ago.

The name of this carrier is never mentioned. I suspect this is because of wartime security concerns. For the record, "The Iron Woman" was USS Cabot CVL-28. But, I can no reference in her histories of Pyle being aboard.

This is a great site and I appreciate it being made available. Too few today know of Ernie Pyle.
