|Professor Steve Raymer's new book is Redeeming Calcutta. He'll talk about the process at the Overseas Press Club in New Yok Feb. 20.|
The book, just published by Oxford University Press, is the product of six trips to the city over a span of five years, with each trip designed to seek out more of Calcutta’s story, Raymer says. A former National Geographic photojournalist, Raymer had traveled all over the world but was interested in telling Calcutta's story beyond the poverty for which is famous.
Redeeming Calcutta includes hundreds of photographs as well as 13,000 words of text and 7,000 words of captions. Many of the images, such as one of a shepherd driving his flock through the city while talking on a cellphone, juxtapose the city's modernity alongside its cultural traditions.
See the OPC website for details about the talk.
