About This Course

For two weeks in the summer of 2010, 12 Indiana University School of Journalism students joined 12 Moi University Department of Communication students to report on HIV/AIDS and the work of the AMPATH project in Eldoret, Kenya. The course, Reporting on HIV/AIDS in Africa, was taught by Professor Jim Kelly.

Before arriving in Eldoret, the IU students spent two weeks in Bloomington in preparation. Prof. Kelly and area experts introduced students to the basic pathology of HIV/AIDS, informed them about the epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, provided them with insight into the unique culture of western Kenya, and briefed them about the genesis and current work of the IU-Kenya Partnership under which the Academic Model Providing Access To Healthcare (AMPATH) operates.

While in Eldoret, students worked in two-person teams–one American, one Kenyan to report from Eldoret and from many rural villages in the area. Each team completed two to three stories about health provision in Eldoret. To read their reports, please click on the author’s name at right. After leaving Eldoret, the IU students met with African journalists and international correspondents in Nairobi to discuss health reporting.
