Summer Grants for Teachers
Dear Teachers & Advisers:
We hope you will be able to take one or more workshops we’re offering for scholastic journalism teachers and advisers this summer. You and your students would be most welcome on our campus.
The Indiana University School of Journalism is planning to award several $500 Gretchen Kemp Grants for high school teachers to study at IU in Bloomington this summer. The funds may be used for one of the one-week journalism workshops for teachers/advisers.
The grants are intended for teachers who currently have journalism teaching or advising responsibilities or who are preparing for those responsibilities. The recipients are expected to return to journalism teaching in the fall. Priority will be given to uncertified teachers/advisers and to those with little or no journalism teaching and advising experience.
To apply for a grant, mail a letter to me no later than April 11. In your letter you should indicate why you want to go to summer school, what you plan to study, and how it fits into your career as a journalism teacher. In addition, you should send a copy of your resume. Letters of recommendation are optional but always appreciated and helpful in the selection process.
A decision on the grants will be made by a committee consisting of School of Journalism faculty members. You will be notified of the committee’s decision in early May.
The Kemp Grants are being awarded from funds created by friends and professional associates of the late Gretchen Kemp, a longtime and highly respected IU Journalism professor and HSJI’s first director.
