Student Fees and Housing
![]() |
While attending the IU High School Journalism Institute, you'll live much like college students in on-campus housing. You will have a roommate and you'll be supervised by counselors who are college students and, often, journalism majors, too.
Here are details about housing, meals, fees and refunds:
Housing
Women and men will use separate quads of Teter Residence Hall. This fully air-conditioned dorm is near the center of campus and within a short walk of most HSJI large- and small-group sessions. All rooms are doubles, and roommate requests will be accepted if both students request one another in the online registration form.
Meals
Just like IU students who live in Teter during the school year, HSJI students will use prepaid meal cards. At check-in, each student will receive a $40 prepaid meal card, which is included in the workshop registration fee. Students who want to purchase additional meal cards may choose this option on the online payment form. However, you also should bring extra money to purchase some meals at on-campus and nearby off-campus locations. Campus-run food courts accept both cash and your personal debit or credit cards. No refunds are available for unspent meal card balances.

Workshop Fees
Costs for the 2012 workshops are $375 per five-day session, which includes tuition, residence hall room, one $40 meal card and most supplies. Between session stayovers are $25 per night, which includes residence hall room, supervision by workshop staff and some recreational opportunities.
HSJI offers a commuter fee of $265 for local students living at home. Meal cards are not required for commuters.
Refunds
Full refunds of institute fees, less a $60 non-refundable processing charge, will be made if we are notified of a cancellation at least two weeks in advance of the workshop's beginning. After that, refunds will be made at 75 percent at least one week in advance, 50 percent by the first day of workshops; no refunds after first day.
