Sports Journalism
The Converged Newsrooms’ Sports Journalism workshop is July 22-26, 2012. Imagine being a sports reporter at a Big Ten university with 22 varsity teams, multiple national championships, alumni in the pros, world-class facilities and an extensive media relations department. Where better to hone your sports reporting skills?

If you take this workshop, you’ll have access to experts and newsmakers as you learn how to go beyond game coverage and report on sports-related issues, such as repetitive strain injuries, NCAA recruiting regulations and the business of college athletics.

Typical daily schedule for students in the Converged Newsrooms workshop:

  • Day 1
    • Noon-2:30 p.m. Check-in at Teter Quad
    • 3-5 p.m. Introductions and newsroom meetings
    • 5-7 p.m. Dinner and tours of facilities
    • 7 -9 p.m. Instructional sessions and residence hall orientation
    • 11:30 p.m. Lights out
  • Days 2, 3, 4
    • 7-8:30 a.m. Breakfast
    • 8:30-11:30 a.m. Newsroom budget meetings, instructional break-out sessions
    • 11:30-1:30 Lunch
    • 1:30-5 p.m. Field work: news gathering, writing and editing, production work, publishing on the Web; coaching sessions with professional journalists, college journalists and experienced advisers
    • 5-7 p.m. Dinner
    • 7-9 p.m. Open lab; recreation programs led by counselors
  • Day 5
    • 7-8:30 a.m. Breakfast
    • 8:30-10:30 a.m. Final newsroom meetings — time to debrief and reflect
    • 11 a.m.-noon Awards ceremony
    • Noon Check out of residence hall and depart
