The late Jim Tellus, left, was an advocate of great storytelling, even amid media’s economic woes. The WTHR president and general manager talked to students during a visit in 2007.
WTHR-TV president and general manager Jim Tellus died Tuesday. He’ll be missed not only in professional circle but also by School of Journalism assistant professor Mike Conway, who worked with Tellus years ago at KAKE-TV in Wichita, Kan.

“He was a good guy who made sure our students had opportunities,” Conway said.

But his contributions also were in his passion for storytelling, even as he moved into the business of broadcast management, Conway said. Tellus had visited several classes at the school, including  Conway’s, talking to students about the power of video storytelling.

A supporter of the narrative, well-crafted stories that take time to develop and produce, Tellus also addressed economic issues in broadcast TV but stressed the importance of generating quality news pieces.
