Wiseman will receive a $2,600 scholarship for her winning article, “107-2: Beyond the score,” published in the Indiana Daily Student. Scudder will receive a certificate of merit for his story, "Bob Knight's troubled legacy."
One hundred six undergraduate journalism programs at colleges and universities across the nation participate in the program, which conducts five monthly writing contests in different categories as well as competitions in photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia.
Students submit published work to the competition, and schools accumulate points based on their students’ achievements. IU is in first place in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition with the highest accumulated student points in the first three writing competitions. Previously, senior Mary Kenney took second in enterprise reporting and Wiseman took third.
Based on her first place win, Wiseman now qualifies for the National Writing Championships in San Francisco in June, where she’ll compete with other finalists in an on-the-spot reporting series.
IU students have performed well in the Hearst program in recent years. In 2011, Danielle Paquette, BAJ’11, won the final competition and Caitlin Johnston, BAJ’11, was second. Last year, Biz Carson, BAJ’12, place second. IU won the overall writing competition in 2010 and 2011, and was second last year.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
