Untold Stories:
Workshop focuses on nonprofits

Professionals looking for ways to better cover nonprofits may wish to take advantage of an upcoming workshop, “Untold Stories: Finding news in community organizations,” Oct. 12 in Indianapolis.

The School of Journalism, McCormick Foundation and IU Center on Philanthropy are sponsoring the daylong event for media professionals to better understand these organizations’ roles in communities and to develop strategies for reporting on them.

Leaders for the sessions including national and Indiana journalists and educators. Keynote speaker is Patrick Cole, philanthropy reporter for Bloomberg News.

The free workshop is 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Indiana State Government Center South, 401 W. Washington St., Indianapolis. To register, send your name, news organization/affiliation and hotel reservation needs to School of Journalism Director of Communications Beth Moellers, 812-855-6317. She also may answer any questions.

Itinerary:

  • 8 a.m. Sign in, networking.

  • 8:30 a.m. Welcome and overview: Patrick Rooney, director of the IU Center on Philanthropy, and School of Journalism Dean Brad Hamm.

  • 8:45 a.m. Getting the Story: Veteran journalists share sources of information about community organizations.
    Panelists include Andrea Ball, philanthropy reporter at the Austin American-Statesman; Chris Quinn, religion and nonprofits reporter, Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Les Lenkowsky, IU professor of Philanthropic Studies and Public Affairs; Hans Ibold, assistant professor, IU School of Journalism; Kellie McGiverin-Bohan, research assistant, IU Indiana Nonprofits: Scope and Community Dimensions project.

  • 11 a.m. Nonprofit Governance: The role of the Attorney General.
    Abigail Kuzma, chief counsel of consumer protection in the Indiana Attorney General’s office.

  • 12:45-1:45 p.m. Lunch. What Price Charity? Community groups under scrutiny.
    Panelists include John Ketzenberger, Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute and former reporter; Cindy Lott, charities regulation, Columbia University; Lucinda Nord, public policy, Indiana Association of United Ways; Les Lenkowsky, IU professor of Philanthropic Studies and Public Affairs.

  • 2 p.m. Trends in Charitable Giving.
    Melissa Brown, managing editor of Giving USA and associate director of research, IU Center on Philanthropy.

  • 3:45 p.m. Indiana Achievement Reception and Awards.

  • 5:45 p.m. Dinner and keynote presentation, Patrick Cole, Bloomberg News.
