Spring registration: Course updates

SoJ Web Report | Nov. 7, 2011
Spring registration is near, and the school offers these updates about some courses.

J488 Agency 7, a practicum where students operate an advertising agency, serving area clients, returns this semester. It is set for 5:45 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in Ernie Pyle Hall 213. Prerequisites are J320 or J321 with a grade of C- or better. The course counts as a journalism advanced skills class.

Instructor is Bruce Hetrick, a veteran public relations professional who ran his own agency for 18 years. Before launching Hetrick Communications, he was a mayoral press secretary in Fort Wayne, and he also served as the associate creative director of a $50 million agency in New England. He has served as head of advertising and public relations for the former Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

J431 Public Relations and Nonprofits will explore the world of nonprofit organizations and their public relations needs that include philanthropy, advocacy and work on major social issues. Taught by lecturer Dennis Elliott, this class will meet 4-5:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

One new course is J360 Covering the World Around Us, taught by Dan Ferber, an award-winning science writer in Indianapolis whose most recent book is Changing Planet, Changing Health. The course will meet 4-6:30 p.m. Mondays. The focus is on coverage of some of the biggest science stories of the times: tsunamis, climate change and water shortages, for example. The course counts as an advanced skills elective.
