John and Justin Rumbach of The Herald in Jasper, Ind., will judge Inland Press Association’s news picture contest from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Associate professor Jim Kelly, who is organizing the event, said all are welcome to stop in the Ernie Pyle Hall lounge during that time to see how the two decide the winners.
During the 7 p.m. talk in the Ernie Pyle Hall auditorium, the Rumbachs will describe their work and careers. The Rumbach family has led The Herald since the early 1900s, and John Rumbach now is co-publisher with his cousin. John’s son, Justin Rumbach, is photo editor. The Saturday feature, a newspaper staple for 30 years, has become a centerpiece for documenting daily life in the area.
Though serving a small southern Indiana town and surrounding counties, The Herald has made a name for itself, especially in photography, design and photo editing. In the NPPA’s “Best of Photojournalism 2009” contest, The Herald won top honors for Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year, ahead of the second-place New York Times and third-place Los Angeles Times.
In the 2009 Pictures of the Year International competition, the two won several awards, including a first for series or special section editing, ahead of the LA Times and Rocky Mountain News.
