The School of Journalism welcomes the National Society of Newspaper Columnists as it stages its annual conference in Bloomington July 8-11.

The group, founded in 1977, includes among its members columnists from small newspapers as well as nationally-syndicated writers.

The weekend will feature workshops and, on Saturday night, a banquet honoring NSNC contest winners and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Carl Hiaasen, Miami Herald columnist and best-selling author.

Workshops include a panel featuring local authors Michael Koryta, Scott Russell Sanders and James Alexander Thom talking on “Choosing the Right Words”; School of Journalism associate professor Owen V. Johnson as a panelist on “Appreciating Ernie Pyle”; and associate professor Mike Conway joining co-author Betsi Grabe of the Department of Telecommunications to discuss their 2007 work on the rhetoric of Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly.

NSNC former president Mike Leonard, who is a columnist and reporter at the Herald-Times, is making local arrangements for the conference and will moderate a panel.

The School of Journalism is one of the sponsors of the conference, along with Indiana University, The Herald-Times, Schurz Communications, VisitBloomington.com, Nick’s English Hut and Duke Energy.
