School collects medallions, cash prize at Hearst competition

The IU School of Journalism collected two medallions and a prize of $10,000 from the Hearst Journalism Awards Program Saturday in New York City.

Dean Brad Hamm was on hand to accept the prizes, and senior Rachel Stark spent the week competing with eight other national finalists in the final part of the Hearst competition.

The program stages contests over the course of a year, with journalism undergraduates at participating colleges competing in areas such as writing, broadcast, multimedia and photojournalism.

Schools accumulating the most points earned by their students in each category are designated the winners of the Intercollegiate Competitions. IU won the writing competition earlier this year and placed ninth in the overall university competition Saturday. University of North Carolina won first place, Arizona State second and Penn State third.
