School of Journalism junior Michael Sanserino won first place and $2,000 Saturday at the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation’s 21st Annual Thomas R. Keating Feature Writing Program.
Franklin College freshman Travis Braun won second place and $1,000 and IU junior Chip Cutter won third place and $500. IU students Elizabeth Dilts, Jonathan Hines, Kristi Oloffson, Allie Townsend and Ashley Wilson also competed.
The Keating competition is named in honor of Indianapolis Star columnist and feature writer Thomas R. Keating, who died in 1985.
For the contest, students apply in September and, if selected as finalists, spend a weekend in November critiquing their writing in workshops and competing in a writing assignment. Finalists were dropped off at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis where they had about four hours to develop and report on a feature story, which they later composed in the Star’s information center.
Sanserino, who was a Keating competition finalist in 2006, received his award at a Saturday evening banquet.
