Danielle Rindler is the 2011 recipient of the Society for News Design Foundation's scholarship.
Senior Danielle Rindler is the winner of the 2011 Society for News Design Foundation Scholarship, a $2,000 award and a top honor for a student designer.

Rindler submitted her portfolio and responded to two essay questions to compete for the award, which draws submissions from students around the nation who plan careers in visual journalism.

In preparing her portfolio, Rindler had plenty to draw on. She has been art director at the Indiana Daily Student, will be print and Web designer for Inside magazine in the fall, and, in between, was a special sections editor who helped oversee the switch to a narrower web width at the IDS earlier this year.

“Danielle’s dependable leadership and exceptional news judgment energized the publications with alternative story forms and sharp, crisp features that pleased both readers and advertisers,” wrote Ron Johnson, IU director of student media, in his recommendation letter to SND.

Rindler also assisted lecturers Steve and Bonnie Layton in launching a student chapter of SND at IU this spring. She also is active with the student chapter of Society of Professional Journalists at IU.

Her other design awards include those from College Media Advisers, Columbia Scholastic Press Association and Society of Professional Journalists.

An Ernie Pyle Scholar, Rindler also was named a Founders Scholar earlier this year, an honor for IU students who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 or above.
