Raymer visited a jute mill during his trip to India to complete work on his next book. He said workers at the mill use  machinery made in 1856 and endure harsh conditions.
Professor Steve Raymer is in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, completing work on his next book, Redeeming Calcutta: A Portrait of India's Former Imperial Capital.

During his fifth trip to the country since 2007, he has had an insider's look at the Raj Bahvan, or Government House, the home of the former British Viceroy and now the residence of the governor of West Bengal State, as well as a jute mill “that was right out of the 19th century English midlands,” he said in an e-mail.

“Machines in the mill were made in Scotland in 1856 and little had changed,” he wrote. “The working conditions were as harsh as I have ever experienced in my career and the air pollution was so bad that I had an asthma attack that last two days.”
