Raymer piece on ‘framing’ suffering in NPPA magazine

March 3, 2009
Bangladesh 1974
Steve Raymer’s career has taken him to many locations where people are suffering, such as Bangladesh in 1974.
Associate professor Steve Raymer writes about how visual journalists "frame" the suffering of the world’s poor and those caught in the cross-fire of conflicts around the world in the February issue of News Photographer Magazine, the official journal of the National Press Photographers Association.

Raymer says that "in simplifying, prioritizing, and organizing a story, which is what framing is all about, the iconic image that looks into someone’s eyes — preferably someone in agony — has become a key piece of journalistic shorthand."
