The discussion was on judicial elections and the media's role in the possible erosion of a fair, independent and impartial judiciary. Specifically, they talked about special interest groups who are buying huge blocks of advertising to oppose judges who they think may disagree with their political ambitions, Pieratt said.
Pieratt, a former TV and radio broadcaster who owns a radio station in North Vernon, Ind., served on the panel with Judge Michael Hyman of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Judge George Perez of the Minnesota Tax Court, and Judge G. Michael Witte (retired), executive secretary of the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission. The panel was sponsored by the American Bar Association.
