Associate professor Tony Fargo announced the award at the School of Journalism Scholarship Ceremony April 5. Parameswaran is on sabbatical this semester and could not attend.
The Trustees’ Teaching Award was established by the IU Board of Trustees in 2000 to honor excellence in teaching. Each academic unit is to give the award each year, based on recommendations of their policy committees.
In the School of Journalism, the Policy Committee includes professor David Nord, Fargo and assistant professors Mike Conway and Emily Metzgar.
Fargo said the committee attempts to choose “the person who has maintained a high level of student engagement while also maintaining academic rigor in a variety of courses, large and small, graduate and undergraduate, skills and lecture” and that Parameswaran’s record for 2008 “stood out from the crowd for all of us.”
Parameswaran’s research interests include feminist cultural studies, gender and media globalization, South Asia and postcolonial studies. She is a visiting faculty member this spring at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.
