IU student journalists snagged first and second place, and IU remains in first place after the fifth of six rounds of writing competitions in the 51st William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program.

Danielle Paquette won the personality/profile writing contest and will receive a $2,600 scholarship for her winning article, “The Shepherd’s Lamb,” published in the Indiana Daily Student. Senior CJ Lotz took second place and will receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Conducted over several months, the program also includes competitions in photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia, with points awarded for student performance.

So far, IU still is in first place in the writing competition as students have racked up points in sports writing, feature writing, opinion writing and in-depth writing. Students also won awards in photojournalism.

Last year, IU won the writing competition.

As a result of her first-place win, Paquette, who also won sixth place in the in-depth writing contest earlier this year, qualifies for the National Writing Championship in San Francisco in June.

Schools receive matching awards in the program, which awards more than $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
