Panelists assess state of women in sports media

SoJ Web Report | April 9, 2011
While teams were preparing for the NCAA women’s basketball championship game at nearby Conseco Fieldhouse, panelists at IUPUI were discussing the challenges of female sports media professionals.

The National Sports Journalism Center’s “Women in Sports Media: Obstacles, Opportunities and Observations” discussion April looked at why few sports journalists are female, with a few panelists predicting the situation is getting worse. The discussion ranged from the continued instances of harassment of women sports journalists to the lack of gender diversity in sports departments.

Panelists included Michael Anastasi, managing editor for sports of The Salt Lake Tribune and incoming president of the Associated Press Sports Editors; Christine Brennan, award-winning columnist for USA Today and commentator for ABC News, CNN and NPR; Dave Goren, executive director of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association; Ann Killion, author and contributing writer for Sports Illustrated; and Shelley Smith, correspondent for ESPN’s SportsCenter.

The event was co-sponsored by the Association for Women in Sports Media, the APSE and NSSA.
