The National Sports Journalism Center will be able to launch a free Diversity Sports Media Institute this summer, thanks in parth to a $35,000 grant from the McCormick Foundation of Chicago.

High school students in Indianapolis and Chicago will arrive at IUPUI June 27 for the weeklong workshop that will offer students intensive, hands-on training in the development and production of a sports broadcast and Web site, according to NSJC Director Tim Franklin. Students will interview professional athletes, coaches and prominent sports journalists during that week, and then work with media professionals and IU faculty to produce a television segment and a Web page.

The nonprofit McCormick Foundation was established as a charitable trust in 1955 upon the death of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, the longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune.
