The contest awards five $5,000 print journalism scholarship through a nationwide essay competition. Preference is for students pursing careers in sports journalism.
The awards honor Jim Murray, a founder of Sports Illustrated in 1953, a sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times from 1961-68, a winner of the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for commentary and a 14-time winner of the National Sportswriter of the Year Award, among other achievements and recognitions.
The winners of the scholarship are selected from a national essay competition. Winners travel to California in the fall for a special reception and awards banquet.
