Kelly article looks at Katrina photo coverage

Gena Asher | Jan. 15, 2008
Associate professor Jim Kelly’s article, “What Katrina Revealed: A visual analysis of the hurricane coverage by news wire and U.S. newspapers,” appears in the current issue of Journalism and Mass  Communication Quarterly. Shahira Fahmy and Yung Soo Kim are co-authors.

The authors compared front page photos in U.S. newspapers and those distributed by AP and Reuters and found that front page photos “differed significantly” from those photos provided by wire services.  “Our analyses challenge the notion that decisions made by wire services dictate the visual coverage of a news event,” according to the abstract accompanying the article.
