Johnston, IU take top Hearst honors

Gena Asher | Dec. 26, 2010
Journalism student Caitlin Johnston took first place honors in the college opinion writing competition and IU won first place overall in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition of the 51st annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program.

The Hearst awards program consists of six monthly writing competitions, three photojournalism competitions, three broadcast news competitions and two multimedia competitions, with championship finals in all divisions. Schools and individual students win in each category, and cumulative numbers determine the champions.

The program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually. Johnston receives a $2,600 scholarship for her winning article, “The Home Front,” published in Inside Magazine. IU receives a matching grant. Johnston also qualifies for the National Writing Championship which takes place in San Francisco in June.

Senior Mickey Woods placed 24th in the opinion writing category with his piece, "The joyride."

Earlier in December, IU journalism students Biz Carson and Kelly Cochran finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the feature writing category, the first of the series.

Last year, IU finished first in the Hearst Journalism Awards Intercollegiate Writing Competition after its student journalists accumulated the most points over the series of contests. Junior Rachel Stark finished in the top 10 in the individual contest and competed for a national title in New York in June.
