Journalism students participate in election day events

Nov. 6, 2008
They blogged, they interviewed and were interviewed, they traveled to Chicago. School of Journalism students participated in election day Nov. 4 in all manner of ways.

Here’s a sampling:

  • IDS reporters Kristi Oloffson, Peter Stevenson and Benjamin Phelps all went to Grant Park in Chicago for the to hear President-elect Barack Obama’s speech. They blogged about the excitement at www.idsnews.com/blogs/thepolitiker/.

  • Luke Russert of NBC News spent two days here, interviewing IU students and broadcasting live for NBC’s and MSNBC’s news coverage. He interviewed Clare Krusing at the Union Board Election Night party, but Krusing said the interview wasn’t aired because California results came in and the network went to that coverage. She was in other shots that aired.

  • IUSTV covered the Luke Russert event, but the student-run station hasn’t yet posted any of it on its Web site. Freshmen Ashley Bornancin and Nick James got a one-on-one interviews with Russert.

  • Students in associate professor Owen Johnson’s J200 Reporting, Writing and Editing 1 class participated in election day activities Tuesday by producing copy that now appears on the (Bloomington) Herald-Times’ Web site.

Students reported on events at a variety of election locations around the county. Their reports range from observational reports to those featuring election workers and voters standing in line. The stories give a slice-of-life picture of one of the busiest election days in recent years.
