IUPUI’s Brown wins educator award

June 9, 2009
James W. Brown, executive associate dean of the Indiana University School of Journalism at IUPUI, will receive the Robin F. Garland Educator Award from the National Press Photographers Association at its national convention June 13 in Las Vegas. The award is given for outstanding service as a photojournalism educator.

Brown has a long history of service to journalism organizations including the NPPA. In April, he was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame and in May was named a Distinguished Hoosier by Gov. Mitch Daniels.

In 2007, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Hoosier State Press Association, an award that historically has been given to a practicing journalist. Among his photographic awards, Brown has won Gold and Bronze awards for media productions from the International Film and Television Festival of New York.

His most recent publication of photographs illustrates Long Journey Home: Oral Histories of Contemporary Delaware Indians. The book was Best Non-Fiction Book (2008) in the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists Awards and is published by Indiana University Press. The book represents more than 10 years of work by Brown.

Other School of Journalism professors who received the prestigious Garland Educator Award are Claude Cookman (1999), I. Wilmer Counts (1986) and John W. Ahlhauser (1981).
