Journalism students at IUPUI took advantage of the Super Bowl festivities in Indianapolis by working as reporters and social media experts and in communications with other media.

A student news bureau covered the players, Media Day and events surrounding Sunday’s game for the National Sports Journalism Center at the School of Journalism at IUPUI. Graduate student Brian Burnsed covered the game for the Salt Lake Tribune. Josh Weinfuss secured a press credential to cover the game for the Albany (Ga.) Herald.

The week gave students a chance to work as reporters as well as put the NSJC in the spotlight, said Pam Laucella, IUPUI assistant professor and academic director of the NSJC. Student work is featured on the NSJC website, for example, already one of the most-visited sports journalism websites in the country.

Six public relations students worked with Indianapolis-based Raidious to manage social media during the event. Raidious CEO Taulbee Jackson was on the Super Bowl host committee and helped develop a social media strategy. The Super Bowl Social Media Command Center team included 50 people, 16 of whom were area journalism or telecommunications students, fielding requests and answering questions on numerous Twitter feeds and Facebook pages.

IUPUI public relations lecturer Julie Vincent said she and two graduate students provided support for Homeland Security in the Joint Information Center, a one-stop resource for several agencies communicating with media.
