Indiana University is in first place in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition and two students earned individual honors in the 51st annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program, organizers announced this week.

The school has the highest accumulated student points from the first three of six writing competitions of the academic year. The most recent students to contribute to the school’s point standings are Danielle Paquette, who earned a sixth place certificate of merit, and Jessica Haney, who earned an eighth place and certificate of merit in the in-depth writing portion of the contest.

The Hearst awards program consists of 14 competitions over several months in journalism areas such as reporting and writing, multimedia and photojournalism with championship finals in all divisions. Schools and individual students win in each category, and cumulative numbers determine the champions.

The top five students in each category win scholarships and their schools receive matching awards. The program gives out more than $200,000 in awards each year.
