Alumna Ashley Wilkerson’s photo of this crash involving riders of Phi Sigma Kappa, Phi Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon at the 2007 Little 500 won a first place award at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association Awards.

The Indiana Collegiate Press Association awarded five IDS staffers for their work at a seminar Saturday in Indianapolis.

The ICPA presented the honors in conjunction with the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation’s annual Better Newspaper Contest and seminar at the Indiana Convention Center.

IU winners are:

• Senior Allie Townsend, first place for feature writing, “Scars and strength: The story of a survivor;”
• Junior Michael Sanserino, first place for sports writing, “Like father, like son;”
• Andrew Shaffer, B.A.J. ’07, first place for editorial writing, “IU building should not be named after a racist;”
• Ashley Wilkerson, M.A. ’07, first place for photography for a shot of a Little 500 bike wreck;
• Chris Freiberg, B.A.J. ’07, second place for news writing, “Myers guilty.”

The seminar featured several workshops for attendees. Nancy Comiskey, interim student media director, conducted one session on “Five things I learned about writing after I knew it all.”
