Last year, students learned the finer points of Photoshop during an HSJI workshop. The 2010 student sessions begin Monday.
The IU High School Journalism Institute resumes Monday with three sessions of workshops designed for high school students from around the nation looking to improve their skills and learn new ones.

HSJI Director Teresa White said this year’s sessions include the customary workshops covering all media, led by high school and college-level journalism teachers. The sessions each will include two “Lunch with a Pro” sessions.

“We started this last year as a way for students to hear from professionals working in many areas,” White said. In a relaxed setting, students have the chance to ask questions about professional life and broader journalism topics.

White said she’s lined up print pros, broadcasters, publishers, designers and photojournalists to chat with students.

Sessions this year are:
  • July 5-9: Yearbook, newspaper/news magazine, photojournalism, online journalism
  • July 11-15: TV news, yearbook, newspaper/news magazine, business/advertising, photojournalism
  • July 17-21: TV news , yearbook, newspaper/news magazine, photojournalism

Students will blog at HSJI.org, as well as post some of their projects.

In June, HSJI hosted workshops for high school teachers who advise publications or teach journalism who, just like their high school counterparts, aim to learn new skills.

HSJI is in its 64th year as a program to further the education and skills of high school leaders and students. Check out the website for more.
