Howard competition deadline Feb. 28

Feb. 21, 2008
The deadline for entries in the Scripps Howard Foundation’s Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition is Thursday, Feb. 28.

Winners will be announced March 17. They receive a 12-day expenses-paid journalism study trip to Japan and South Korea, June 14-27.

The competition, established in 1984 in cooperation with the Indiana University School of Journalism, honors the memory of Roy W. Howard, who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press International from 1912-1920. Asia was an area of special interest to Howard.

Entries consist of four to six published articles or photos or two to four broadcast or online stories.

Last year’s winners visited some of the world’s largest newspapers, the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, and the Imperial Palace Park, where they learned about Roy Howard’s 1933 interview with the Emperor of Japan, the first ever by an American.
