Hamilton, Abhyankar visit J460 Reporting Conflict and Terrorism

SoJ Web Report | April 17, 2011
Professor Steve Raymer’s J460 Reporting Conflict and Terrorism class heard from former congressman Lee Hamilton and Rajenda Abhyankar, diplomat-in-residence at IU’s Center for American and Global Security, last week.

Hamilton, now director of IU’s Center on Congress, talked on “The Role of News Media in Times of War and Terrorism: A view from Capitol Hill.” He was U.S. Representative for Indiana's Ninth District from 1965 to1999.

Abhyankar, a senior diplomat in the Indian Foreign Ministry, was Indian ambassador to Baghad, NATO and the European Union. He talked on the so-called “CNN” effect and how a diplomat views the role of media in war, and discussed commonalities between diplomacy and international journalism and the symbiotic relationship between reporters and government officials, especially in authoritarian countries.
