Grad student’s ‘Trash to Treasure’ film set for Oct. 13

Gena Asher | Oct. 8, 2009
Learn how to turn thousands of pounds of donated goods into cash by watching Trash to Treasure, a film by graduate student John Patishnock.

Patishnock directed, produced and wrote the film, which documents the eighth annual Trash to Treasure fundraising event at Penn State University. It will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Ernie Pyle Auditorium. All are welcome to attend and to join the Q&A session afterward.

Trash to Treasure reveals the inner workings of the largest philanthropic event conducted by the Centre County United Way of Pennsylvania, the recipient of the funds. More than 70 tons of donated goods, 600 tables, hundreds of volunteers and thousands of shoppers gather each year at Beaver Stadium on Penn State’s University Park campus for a one day extravaganza that last year generated $63,000 for charity. To date, the program has raised more than $370,000 for Centre County United Way and saved over 550 tons of goods from being shipped to a landfill.

The film has had numerous showings across the country and has been submitted to a number of national film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival.
