Tim Franklin, the director of the National Sports Journalism Center, organized and moderated the opening general session panel at the national Associated Press Sports Editors convention in Salt Lake City June 23. The session, titled "Journalism: The State of the Union," was a 90-minute discussion on the future of the news industry generally and sports media specifically.

The panelists included Rick Edmonds, media business analyst for the Poynter Institute; Marty Kaiser, the editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the immediate past president of the American Society of News Editors; David Shribman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; and Ted Power, the vice president of the West Group Community Publishing Division for Gannett and publisher of the Reno Gazette-Journal. The Salt Lake Tribune covered the panel.
