Faculty, doctoral students to participate at ICA

Faculty and graduate students are headed to the International Communications Association’s annual meeting in Montreal May 22-26.

ICA is an academic association for those studying and teaching in communications. Formed 50 years ago, the ICA now has more than 4,300 members in 70 countries.

For this annual conference, the ICA has accepted several faculty and students papers in several divisions. Faculty members also will serve on panels or as discussants.

Here’s a list of School of Journalism faculty and student papers:
  • Roy W. Howard Professor David Weaver will be a panelist on "The Future of Journalism Research," part of the program of the Journalism Studies division.
  • Associate professor Owen V. Johnson will be a discussant.
  • Professor Chris Ogan will participate on a panel, "Changing Impact: New Methodologies in Media and Cultural Diversity Research." Her presentation is "Wanted: Methodologies that Accurately Measure the Role of Media in the Real Lives of Migrants in their Communities." It will be presented to the Ethnicity and Race in Communications Interest Group.
  • “Ethics Gaps and Ethics Gains: Differences and Similarities in Journalism Students’ Perceptions of Plagiarism and Fabrication,” by assistant professor Mike Conway and doctoral student Jacob Groshek, accepted in Journalism Studies division.
  • "Blogs and Big Media: A Comparative Study of Agendas," by doctoral student Gerry Lanosga.
  • "That’s Enough ‘Nigger’: An Argument for Regulating Hate Speech,” by doctoral student Lanier Frush Holt.
  • “Transcending Borders, Facing Challenges: Journalists and Identity in the SaarLorLux Region,” by doctoral student Kevin Grieves in the journalism studies division.
  • "Professionalizing Artistic Expression: Governmentality and the American Street Performer," by doctoral student Jeff Cannon in the Communication Law & Policy division.
  • “Barbie as Feminine Icon: The Subversion Narrative Gets a Second Run on Film," by doctoral student Jeff Cannon in the Popular Communication Division.
  • "Copyright Protection of Pornography in a Global Context,” by doctoral student Seong Choul Hong in the Law and Policy Division.
