Alumnus Carolyn Washburn, BA’84, has been appointed vice president and editor of The Cincinnati Enquirer, the newspaper announced earlier this month. She is the first female editor in the newspaper’s 170-year history.

A native of Cincinnati, Washburn has worked at newspapers in Michigan, Virginia, New York, Idaho and Iowa. She most recently was editor at The Des Moines Register and, prior to that, was editor at the Idaho Statesman. While in Des Moines, Washburn moderated presidential debates in 2007.

She was named Gannett’s Editor of the Year in 2008 and a first runner up for the same honor a year later. In 2010, she received Gannett’s Chairman’s Ring, and The Register won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography.

In her letter to readers posted at Cincinnati.com, Washburn recalled her high school years when her English teacher encouraged her to work on a new school newspaper and the time she spent one summer at the High School Journalism Institute at IU.
