Junior Allison Berry leads the September call-out meeting of Ed on Campus. The group's national founder, alumna Chandra Czape Turner, visits Nov. 15 as part of a panel discussion.
Students aspiring to work in magazines are naturally interested in the upcoming School of Journalism Speaker Series magazine panel, but Ed on Campus members also are looking forward to hearing from the founder of the national group, Chandar Czape Turner, BAJ’96.

Ed on Campus is the collegiate arm of Ed2010, a national organization that helps magazine writers and editors network. Turner joins fellow alumni Christie Griffin of Fitness, Colin Kearns of Field & Stream and Chad Millman of ESPN The Magazine in a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Ernie Pyle Hall auditorium.

The IU Ed on Campus group is co-sponsoring the event with the school as part of the Speaker Series, which this year has featured two other panels of alumni.

Ed on Campus launched earlier this semester with lecturer Nancy Comiskey, who teaches magazine editing and started the J360 Creating an Indiana Magazine course last year, as adviser. Junior journalism student Allison Berry was one of the first to get involved.

“I was surprised there wasn’t a chapter on campus, considering the pretty good journalism program we have.” Berry said.

She started building the chapter last semester, which she said has been a pretty easy process both through the school and through Ed2010. At the group’s call-out meeting in September, about 30 people attended, double what Berry said she expected.

The national group attracted more people when it launched in 1998 than Turner expected. According to the website, Turner founded Ed2010 as a way for formalize the casual group of friends who met at bars in New York City to exchange industry gossip and share news about job openings. Thirteen years later, Ed2010 has become a national network of industry workers, aspiring writers and, through Ed on Campus, countless college students.

IU’s Ed on Campus members say they have the same goals, to help students connect to the magazine industry. Junior Alex Jin organizes the group’s social media activity.

“It helps keep us as fresh and relevant as possible in an academic environment where the Internet and new media is crucial,” Jin said in an email.

Comiskey said she hopes the organization will capitalize on resources at the school, including guest speakers and student media offerings, as well as tap into the alumni base of working professionals.

“It’s about helping them get that first internship, or networking with alumni and helping them get jobs,” Comiskey said. “It’s a way for our students follow in their footsteps.”
