Cookman’s paper, "Look’s Team in Havana: An American reporter and a Swiss photographer find conflicting perspectives in Cuba immediately after the Missile Crisis," analyzes the Look magazine cover story produced by Laura Bergquist, a senior editor at Look magazine, and René Burri, a member of the Magnum Photos agency, based on their visit to Havana in January 1963, immediately after the Cuban Missile Crisis. It argues that Burri’s photographs subvert Bergquist’s critical article and portray Cuba, President Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara, in a more positive, humanist light.
At the same conference, Cookman was invited to present his book, American Photojournalism: Motivations and Meanings, at a panel for authors who have published books on American journalism during the past year.
