Roy W. Howard Professional-in-Residence Joe Coleman will present his work on the aging Japanese workforce at noon Oct. 22 in Ballantine 004 as part of the East Asian Studies Center's fall colloquia.

Coleman will speak on “Silver Labor: Putting the elderly to work in an aging Japan.” The East Asian Studies Center’s Colloquium Series brings together faculty from IU and other institutions to share current research. Coleman’s is the second of four presentations this fall.

Coleman studied Japan's employment system for six weeks this summer as the recipient of an Abe Fellowship for Journalists awarded by the Social Science Research Council and funded by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

Coleman, whose experience as a journalist took him to Asia, Europe, and Latin America, was the Associated Press bureau chief in Tokyo for four years. His work has appeared in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and many other publications around the world.
