IU journalism students Biz Carson and Kelly Cochran finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 51st annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program's feature writing contest, the  first competition of the series.

Indiana University came in second behind Pennsylvania State University in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition with the highest accumulated student points from the first competition of the academic year.

The Hearst awards program consists of six monthly writing competitions, three photojournalism competitions, three broadcast news competitions and two multimedia competitions, with championship finals in all divisions. The program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually.

Last year, IU finished first in the Hearst Journalism Awards Intercollegiate Writing Competition after its student journalists accumulated the most points over the series of contests. Junior Rachel Stark finished in the top 10 in the individual contest and competed for a national title in New York in June.
