Three journalism students are among 40 student-athletes at IU who are on the inaugural Big Ten Distinguished Scholar list, which honors those with a GPA of 3.7 of higher. Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel of the women’s tennis team and Lucy Ireland of the field hockey team are the journalism majors who have earned this honor.
Last year, Big Ten faculty representatives established this new conference academic recognition to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program, which requires a minimum GPA of 3.0. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution.
