National Geographic photojournalist Alexandra Avakian visits Bloomington Jan. 27-28 to give a lecture and to wrap up an exhibit of her work at a local gallery.

Avakian, who has covered events around the world for nearly two decades, will give a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, in the Ernie Pyle Hall auditorium about the challenges of her work. She has reported from lands torn by war, poverty and conflict, often in areas misunderstood in the West. Many of her subjects are Muslims in many locations around the world.

The next evening, she’ll sign copies of her new book, Windows of the Soul: My Journeys in the Muslim World, at 6 p.m. at Pictura Gallery, 1123 W. Sixth Street. Her work is on exhibit at the gallery through Jan. 28.

Avakian’s work has been published in Time, Life, the New York Times Magazine and in publications in Europe. Since 1995, she has been worked with the National Geographic Society and has been featured on National Geographic television, magazine and books.

Her visit is co-sponsored by Voices and Visions of Islam and Muslims from a Global Perspective project at IU’s Center for the Study of Global Change.
