The deadline is Feb. 28 to apply for the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition, which takes winners to Japan for a study tour of cultural sites and media organizations.

Nine winners from universities around the country will receive the all-expenses paid trip, which is set for June 17-26 this year.

During their trip the group met with journalists in print, broadcast, online journalism to talk about and see the latest in new media technology.

Last year's winners visited Asahi Shimbun, a newspaper with the second largest circulation in Japan. Other visits included Hiroshima and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum; the Imperial Palace grounds; Mainichi Broadcasting System, a television station in Osaka; and Ryoan Temple, which has a famous Zen rock garden. At the end of the trip, the students were honored with an awards ceremony and received Roy W. Howard medallions on an evening cruise in Tokyo Bay.

The competition, established in 1984 in cooperation with the Indiana University School of Journalism, honors the memory of Roy W. Howard, who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press International from 1912-1920. Asia was an area of special interest to Howard, who traveled and reported on the area extensively, even while leading major news organizations.

School of Journalism Dean Brad Hamm, a Howard scholar and frequent traveler to Asia, leads the trip. The school has several ties to Howard, including housing his archives at Ernie Pyle Hall.

The Scripps Howard Foundation administers the contest. Download information brochure and application here. Winners will be announced March 23.
